Mr. Charles Morton

Criminal Defence Lawyer

Since 2019, I have had both criminal and civil litigation experience. After several years as an associate, I founded Charles Morton Law in 2023 to build a criminal defence practice on my own terms: one that puts direct client contact, careful preparation, and clear advice at the centre of every case.

I believe the best way to serve clients is to build them up; to develop their understanding of the case and to contribute my legal and strategic expertise to their decision-making.  I believe clients want to be heard, recognized, and understood, and too often the criminal law works to isolate clients, growing their anxiety and damaging their confidence.

I work with my clients personally and directly, taking the time to understand their situations, explain their options, and cultivate an environment where they can be heard.  When I do engage support staff or third parties, it is always with client consent and for a measurable gain, and it never interferes with the direct relationship.

By using remote software, automation, and efficient systems, I keep overhead low and fees competitive, while still taking on legal aid clients and providing attentive, high‑quality service to each and every client.  Your matter will be handled with care, compassion, competence, and sound strategic judgment.

Principles

01

Active Listening

Active listening is the foundation of effective criminal defence. I take the time to understand your story, your concerns, and your goals in detail. By listening carefully and asking focused questions, I uncover the facts and nuances that can shape a strong defence strategy. This approach helps build trust, reduces uncertainty, and ensures that you feel heard and respected at every stage of the process, from our first meeting to the resolution of your case.

02

Integrity

Steadfast advocacy means standing firmly between you and the power of the state. Once I accept your case, I am committed to defending your rights with persistence and resolve. I challenge the evidence, hold the Crown to its burden, and press for the fairest possible outcome in every forum. Whether through negotiation or at trial, my role is to be your constant defender, ensuring your voice is not lost in a complex and intimidating system.

03

Defense

Strategic judgment is about making clear, informed choices at every step of your case. Criminal matters often involve difficult decisions with serious consequences. I draw on legal experience, careful analysis of the evidence, and a realistic assessment of risk to guide you through those decisions. Together, we weigh options such as resolution, Charter applications, or trial. My goal is to help you choose a path that protects your long‑term interests while respecting your values and priorities.
